Construction began in May 2019 and is expected to be completed by fall 2020. Project construction is being conducted in two phases described below (see map above):
- Phase 1 (2019) — Century Avenue, south of Larpenteur Avenue, to County Road B and Prosperity Road.
- Phase 2 (2020) — County Road B and Prosperity Road to County Road B and Rice Street.
To construct the project, we install the natural gas lines by open trenching and boring. Open trenching involves digging a trench, placing the natural gas line within the trench and restoring the construction work area.
Boring involves using a bore machine to clear an underground pathway through which a natural gas line is pulled. Installation by boring helps to avoid surface impacts to railroad tracks, waterways and environmentally sensitive areas. Before placing natural gas lines into a trench or bore, sections of pipe are welded together and inspected by x-ray. For Phase 2 construction, we continue to use the temporary material storage area located on the west side of White Bear Avenue, south of Burke Avenue. This site was used for Phase 1 and will continue to be used for Phase 2. Click here to view a map showing the Northeast Metro Natural Gas Project temporary materials storage areas.
Prior to the start of construction, we will provide advance notification to landowners, businesses and residents near the project.
We will take measures to reduce construction impacts to the surrounding areas. Potential impacts from construction may include:
- Partial or complete road closures.
- Potential traffic delays.
- Temporary changes to business and resident access.
- Elevated levels of noise during natural gas line installation and testing.
- Vibration near construction sites.
Once construction has been completed, we will restore the sites to the conditions required by permits.
Throughout the construction process, our team will provide regular updates via email (subscribe to our Northeast Metro Natural Gas Project email list by sending us an email), on our hotline at 833-676-4369 and on this website.
If you experience issues related to our construction, we want to hear from you. Please contact us directly at 833-676-4369 or via email at Info@XcelEnergyNEMetroGasProject.com. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience that construction may cause, and we thank you for your patience during the construction process.
