Construction began in May 2019, with the expected total project completion in fall 2020.
Construction will occur in three zones as displayed on the map at the right. The construction zones are as follows. To see construction updates related to each zone, please click on the links below.
- Zone 1 – Century Avenue, south of Larpenteur Avenue, to South Avenue E. and Henry Street N.
- Zone 2 – South Avenue E. and Henry Street N. to County Road B and Prosperity Road
- Zone 3 – County Road B and Prosperity Road to County Road B and Rice Street
To construct the project, we will install the natural gas lines by open trenching and boring. Installation by boring helps to avoid surface impacts to highways, busy roads, intersections, waterways and environmentally sensitive areas. Before placing natural gas lines into a trench or bore, sections of pipe are welded together and inspected by x-ray. For this project, we will have two temporary material storage areas. The temporary material storage areas will be located on the west side of White Bear Ave, just south of Burke Avenue, and on the west side of Century Avenue N., just south of Holloway Avenue. Temporary work trailers, equipment and materials will also be stationed at the sites from April through October. The sites will be restored to previous conditions when the contractor completes activities at the sites. Click here to view a map showing the Northeast Metro Natural Gas Project temporary materials storage areas.
Prior to the start of construction, we will provide advance notification to landowners, businesses and residents near the project.
We will take measures to reduce construction impacts to areas surrounding construction zones. Potential impacts from construction may include:
- Partial or complete road closures
- Potential traffic delays
- Temporary changes to business and resident access
- Elevated levels of noise during natural gas line installation and testing
- Vibration near construction sites
Once construction has been completed, we will restore the sites to their preconstruction condition.
Throughout the construction process, our team will provide regular updates via email (subscribe to our Northeast Metro Natural Gas Project email list by sending us an email), on our hotline at 833-676-4369 and on this website.
If you experience issues related to our construction, we want to hear from you. Please contact us directly at 833-676-4369 or via email at info@XcelEnergyNEMetroGasProject.com.
